Of course, I have my favorite spots but I love venturing out and experiencing new restaurants, beaches, and more. Puerto Rico is a vibrant tapestry of culture, stunning beaches, landscapes, and rich history, making it an unforgettable destination.
Whether wandering through Old San Juan’s colorful streets or lounging on Culebra’s pristine beaches, there are countless ways to experience the island without breaking the bank. Here is a list of essential Puerto Rico travel tips to save you time and money.

1. Research the Best Time to Visit
Timing your visit can drastically affect your experience in Puerto Rico. The best time to visit is between December and April when the weather is pleasantly warm and dry.
However, prices for accommodations and flights tend to be higher during this peak season. Consider traveling during the shoulder months, like May or November, when the weather is still enjoyable, but prices drop significantly.

Puerto Rican cuisine is a feast for the senses, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it. Street food vendors and local eateries offer authentic dishes like Mofongo and Alcapurrias at a fraction of restaurant prices.
Make it a mission to try local favorites at roadside kiosks, where you can savor the flavors while mingling with locals. Additionally, visiting farmers’ markets allows you to taste fresh produce and snacks while supporting local farmers.

4. Stay in a Guesthouse or Airbnb
To save on accommodations, consider booking a guesthouse or Airbnb or a parador instead of a hotel. Please support the locals while visiting- there are many local-owned rentals. These options often provide unique insights into local life and can be significantly cheaper, especially for longer stays.

Plus, many guesthouses offer kitchen facilities, allowing you to prepare some of your meals and save even more. Personally, I like to buy bread at the bakery to have in the morning with coffee. Puerto Rico has the best bakeries. You simply must try pan criollo, pan sobao, and pan de Mallorca.
5. Explore the Natural Wonders
Puerto Rico is home to stunning natural wonders that won’t cost you a dime to enjoy. Hike through El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, where you can marvel at waterfalls, lush vegetation, and the diverse wildlife.
Visit the beaches as well as the glowing bioluminescent bays in Vieques or Fajardo for a magical evening experience. These natural attractions are often free or have minimal entry fees, making them perfect for budget travelers. You can also hop on the ferry to Culebra or Vieques- both are beautiful and make for an awesome excursion on a budget. Ferry rides are $2+

There are plenty of free activities to enjoy in Puerto Rico that allow you to soak up the local culture and scenery.
Visit historic sites like El Morro and San Cristobal Forts, which offer free admission on certain days. Enjoy a day at the beach, where you can relax and swim without spending a cent- maybe a few dollars on food. Participating in local festivals or markets can also provide free entertainment, with music, dance, and art that showcases Puerto Rican culture. 7. Learn Basic Spanish Phrases
While many Puerto Ricans speak English, knowing some basic Spanish phrases can greatly enhance your travel experience. Not only will this effort be appreciated, but it will also enrich your interactions and help you navigate the island more easily.
Simple greetings and polite expressions can open doors and foster connections with locals. Try learning phrases such as…

In Puerto Rico, unexpected events like weather changes or health issues can occur, and having insurance ensures you are covered for cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost belongings. Investing in a good travel insurance policy is a small price to pay for peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip without worrying about potential mishaps.
Tip: After booking your stay, learn where the nearest hospitals or Urgent Care centers are. I recommend going to San Juan if it’s serious. The healthcare system in Puerto Rico is very slow and understaffed. Also, always carry your health insurance card and have a photo on your phone.

9. Use Local Apps for Navigation
The island is drivable and car rentals are pretty economical. We love to rent a Jeep or SUV when we visit because we drive all over and some areas can be like off-roading. We’re used to driving in the tri-state and when you have those skills, you can literally drive anywhere! Practice caution and pay attention when driving in PR. It is generally safe but I advise against driving too late at night in unfamiliar areas.
To navigate Puerto Rico efficiently, download local apps that can guide you through the island’s attractions. Apps like ‘Waze’ for driving directions work perfectly fine on the island. Additionally, consider downloading maps for offline use so you won’t get lost in areas with limited internet access. Especially when hiking or up in the mountains.
Tip: Venture out of San Juan! There is so much to see and do. Explore the West Side and stay for a day or two. Ponce is rich in history and culture, Cabo Rojo has beautiful beaches, Aguadilla has a cool water park, Rincón is a cute surfer town with great coffee shops. And so much more!
10. Embrace the Local Culture
One of the best ways to enjoy Puerto Rico is to immerse yourself in its rich culture. Attend local music events, learn to dance Salsa or Bomba, or join a cooking class to learn about traditional dishes. Participating in community events not only enhances your experience but also allows you to connect with locals and make fun memories. Embracing the island’s culture will provide you with a deeper understanding of Boricua life and traditions.
