My little girl adores musicals and how great it is that we share the same love for the theatre. This Valentine’s day, as a gift from her dad, we went to see Roald Dahl’s Matilda on Broadway. It was a magical evening and probably the best Valentine’s Day ever. Seeing how much she enjoyed the show was definitely a gift in itself.

The books were so fun to read!
We read the book together and saw the movie about a dozen times and now seeing the play was even better. She could not stop talking about it. I was happy to see that my little was not the only child out on Valentine’s Day. In fact, there were lots of little girls dressed in red spending the evening watching the play.
The show commenced with a performance given by about a dozen child actors. The children gave such a wonderful performance full of energy. They did everything from singing and acting to dancing and flipping around on stage.
Little Matilda’s performances were wonderful!
I must say little Matilda surely stole the show. I’m not sure who played her that night or if it was more than one girl. That’s how good she was I suppose. Mr. Wormwood played by Gabriel Ebert (Matilda’s father), was quite a character making us laugh and exchange looks. But the character that made us crack up the most was Miss Trunchbull who was played by Chris Hoch. Yes, a man played this manly female character. One word: Hilarious! Trunchbull had the audience laughing hard and long. My daughter said it was so funny, she’d see it again.
Where to see Matilda on Broadway
The Shubert Theatre is small but the stage set up was fantastic. They used lots of lights to show emotions and cast shadows. It was very clever. My daughter’s favorite part was the finale where the children celebrated and sang after Miss Trunchbull fled the school. Bruce (Jack Broderick) took it away getting very groovy with it in a disco beat.
The Story
The Tony Award®-winning MATILDA THE MUSICAL is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. My Thoughts
Would I recommend this play? Any musical theatre lover will enjoy this.
To families? Absolutely! Any child age 5 and up will surely appreciate this production.
A great message in a wonderful musical
I love the message that the story sends. Matilda is a curious and intelligent little girl who is not loved or appreciated by her family. She stands up for herself and for her classmates at school against a bully principal. She and Miss Honey find each other and by chance and truly need one another’s gifts. Miss Honey provides love and support to the child and the child gives Miss Honey love and above all, courage.
Make sure to stop at Ben & Jerry’s afterward for an extra treat.
*Parent Tip– go on a full stomach. Maybe after dinner. We did the opposite. A drink and two candies can easily cost you $30. Save that for ice cream later.
